Widespread Respiratory Illness Activity Reported Across Illinois
What’s New:
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reports that airborne respiratory illness (ARI) activity is currently high statewide, with influenza reaching “Very High” levels, the most severe classification used by public health surveillance. COVID-19 activity is also elevated, reflecting a broader winter surge in respiratory illness across Illinois.
Why It Matters:
High ARI activity increases the likelihood of multiple, simultaneous outbreaks in congregate care settings. For long-term care facilities, this environment heightens the risk of rapid transmission among residents and staff, placing pressure on infection control measures, staffing capacity, and clinical response timelines.
Key Insights:
Active Outbreak Conditions:
Statewide ARI activity at high levels signals sustained community spread, increasing the risk of introduction into LTC facilities through staff, visitors, and new admissions.
Early Identification Remains Critical:
Prompt evaluation and diagnostic testing support early clinical decision-making, including isolation measures and timely antiviral treatment for influenza when indicated.
Layered Prevention Still Reduces Spread:
Vaccination, hand hygiene, masking when symptomatic, ventilation improvements, and minimizing exposure to sick individuals remain effective tools during periods of elevated respiratory illness activity.
Clinical Impact:
During periods of high ARI activity, LTC facilities that emphasize early detection, rapid response, and consistent prevention practices are better positioned to limit outbreak size, reduce hospital transfers, and maintain continuity of care during peak respiratory season.
