Urgent: Flu Cases and Respiratory Virus Levels on the Rise in Illinois

Flu Cases and Respiratory Virus Levels on the Rise in Illinois
What's New:
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reports that flu cases are increasing across the state, pushing overall respiratory illness levels back up to High. Emergency department (ED) visits and hospital admissions for the flu have surged, while COVID-19 and RSV cases show a decline.
Key Findings:
Flu Hospitalizations Triple COVID-19 Rates: Flu accounts for 4.6% of hospital admissions, compared to 1.6% for COVID-19 and 0.7% for RSV.
Respiratory Illnesses Driving ER Visits: Nearly 20% of all ED visits in Illinois are due to respiratory illnesses, with flu comprising 7.8% of these cases.
Pediatric Deaths a Growing Concern: IDPH has recorded five pediatric flu deaths this season, along with three from RSV and one from COVID-19 and RSV.
Why It Matters:
Flu is circulating widely in Illinois, posing a serious risk to older adults, young children, and individuals with chronic conditions. Early testing and antiviral treatment within 48 hours of symptom onset can significantly reduce the severity of flu cases.
Protect Yourself:
Get Vaccinated: It’s not too late—flu and COVID-19 vaccines are available and offer protection throughout the season.
Seek Early Treatment: Flu antivirals work best within 48 hours of symptom onset, and COVID-19 treatment should start within 5–7 days.
Monitor High-Risk Groups: Individuals over 65, young children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems should take extra precautions.
Practice Prevention: Self-isolate when sick, wear a mask if unable to avoid public spaces, and wash hands frequently.
