What’s New:

  • The CDC has released updated vaccine recommendations for the 2024-2025 respiratory virus season, focusing on COVID-19, flu, and RSV vaccinations. These updates aim to enhance protection for residents of long-term care facilities (LTCs), where vulnerability to severe disease is high due to age and pre-existing health conditions.

  • We have updated our 2024-25 vaccination consent form to include RSV. You can download the latest copy here or by clicking below. If you have already collected consents, you may write in RSV and initial it appropriately after confirming with the patient.

Why It Matters: LTC residents are at a greater risk for severe outcomes from respiratory viruses, making timely and effective vaccination crucial. The updated guidance provides a framework to reduce the risk of outbreaks, minimize hospitalizations, and improve overall health outcomes. By aligning vaccination strategies with these recommendations, LTCs can better safeguard their populations against these viruses.

Key Insights:

Eligibility Criteria for Vaccination:

  • COVID-19 Vaccines: Recommended for all individuals aged 6 months and older, including LTC residents and staff, to promote widespread immunity and prevent severe COVID-19 outbreaks in these high-risk settings.

  • RSV Vaccines: A single dose is advised for adults aged 75 and older, as well as for those aged 60-74 with chronic health conditions or living in nursing homes. This targeted approach is essential for preventing severe RSV-related complications in those most vulnerable.

  • Influenza Vaccines: Annual flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and older. For LTC residents, especially those aged 65 and older, high-dose or adjuvanted flu vaccines are preferred to boost immune response and offer better protection against seasonal flu strains.

Coadministration of Vaccines:

Administering COVID-19, flu, and RSV vaccines during the same visit is encouraged to simplify the vaccination process. This strategy is particularly beneficial for LTC residents who may have mobility challenges or limited access to healthcare services, ensuring comprehensive protection with minimal disruption.

Cost-Effectiveness:

Effective vaccination programs in LTCs can lead to substantial cost savings by preventing outbreaks and reducing the need for emergency care and hospitalizations. This not only alleviates financial burdens on LTC facilities and healthcare systems but also helps maintain operational stability by keeping residents healthy and reducing the strain on healthcare resources during peak virus seasons.
