The Importance of Asymptomatic Isolation in Controlling COVID-19 in Long Term Care Facilities

A study by Schmidt et al. highlights that isolating asymptomatic carriers is crucial for controlling COVID-19 in nursing homes.
Why It Matters:
LTCFs house vulnerable populations with a high risk of severe COVID-19. Without asymptomatic isolation, traditional interventions, such as masking and symptom-based isolation, are insufficient to prevent outbreaks.
Key Findings and Data:
Pre-symptomatic Transmission Challenges: Due to pre-symptomatic transmission, 90% of infections occurred without rigorous asymptomatic isolation, regardless of other non-pharmaceutical interventions.
Impact on Mortality and Healthcare: Higher isolation rates correlated with reductions in hospitalizations and ICU admissions. At 90% isolation, mortality rates dropped significantly.
Recommended Interventions:
Testing Regimens: Regular, high-sensitivity RT-PCR tests are necessary to achieve required isolation rates.
Enhanced Staff Policies: Quarantine protocols pre-shift can lower risks, though these may strain staff resources.
