The review identifies key aspects such as facility size, room occupancy, and infection control infrastructure that can impact infection rates.
Key Findings:
Facility Size and Infection Rates: Smaller LTCFs, particularly those with fewer than 60 beds, were less likely to experience high COVID-19 infection rates. Larger facilities with more than 120 beds faced greater challenges in controlling outbreaks.
Room Occupancy: LTCFs with single-occupancy rooms reported lower COVID-19 incidence and mortality rates compared to those with shared rooms.
New Admissions Impact: Bringing in new residents without stringent testing and isolation increased the likelihood of outbreaks, highlighting the importance of strict admission protocols.
Why It Matters:
These findings suggest that LTCFs should consider limiting facility size, prioritizing single-room occupancy, and implementing strict protocols for new admissions. Such structural changes could play a significant role in mitigating future outbreaks, especially for other respiratory viruses that threaten vulnerable residents.
