Are You Prepared for JN.1? How We’re Adapting Infection Control to Win!
What’s New:
The JN.1 variant and its subvariants—SLip, FLiRT, and KP.2—are presenting new challenges for infection control in long-term care (LTC) facilities. These variants have specific mutations that allow them to evade the immune system and spread more easily. Traditional infection prevention methods need to be adjusted to address these new threats effectively.
Why It Matters:
LTC residents are highly vulnerable to severe illness and death from COVID-19. The JN.1 variants, with their ability to evade immunity, pose a serious risk even to vaccinated individuals. It’s crucial to reassess and strengthen infection control measures to prevent outbreaks and keep residents safe.
Key Insights:
• SLip Variant: The F456L mutation reduces the effectiveness of neutralizing antibodies, even for those with existing immunity.
• FLiRT Variant: The R346T mutation further decreases the protective effects of antibodies, whether from vaccination or natural infection.
• KP.2 Variant: The V1140L mutation complicates infection control efforts by affecting the virus’s infectivity and spike protein processing.
