A systematic review by Arnold et al. assessed non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) to manage viral respiratory outbreaks, revealing that multi-component interventions, hand hygiene, and other targeted measures help reduce infection rates and protect residents.
Key Findings:
Multi-Component Measures: Combining multiple interventions, like visitor restrictions, staff compartmentalization, and rigorous screening, showed moderate effectiveness in reducing infection and death rates.
Hand Hygiene: Promoted as highly effective, studies on influenza and other upper respiratory infections found hand hygiene to be a vital prevention tool.
Surveillance and Routine Testing: Routine testing in LTCFs is potentially effective for early detection and prevention, though more evidence is needed to confirm its impact.
Why It Matters:
For vulnerable LTCF residents, even small outbreaks can lead to severe health consequences. Comprehensive NPI strategies can control spread, save lives, and should be a primary consideration in future pandemic preparedness plans, especially where vaccinations may not be immediately available.
