Exploring Non-Medicinal Measures for COVID-19 Control in Long-Term Care Facilities
What's New:
A recent Cochrane review examined non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) for managing COVID-19 in long-term care facilities (LTCFs). The findings highlight NPIs’ role in reducing infection spread among residents and staff.
Key Findings:
Entry Regulation Successes: Measures such as staff confinement and quarantining new admissions helped lower infection rates, although evidence certainty is low.
Limited Evidence on Contact Control: Use of barriers and cohorting of staff showed mixed results, with studies suggesting both positive and uncertain effects on infection control.
Surveillance Benefits: Routine testing reduced outbreak probabilities, with regular testing favored over symptom-based testing.
Why It Matters:
LTCF residents are highly vulnerable to COVID-19, and NPIs offer immediate infection control strategies where vaccines alone may not suffice. Entry regulation and routine testing can limit outbreaks, protecting this high-risk population while we continue gathering evidence on other methods.
