Vaccine Impact on COVID-19 Outcomes in Long Term Care Facilities
What's New:
A meta-analysis reveals that COVID-19 vaccines drastically reduce the severity of infections among elderly residents in Long Term Care Facilities, cutting fatality and hospitalization rates.
Key Findings:
Decreased Fatality and Hospitalization: Post-vaccine case fatality rate dropped to 13%, down from 23% in the pre-vaccine period, while hospitalization rates fell from 37% to 17%.
Protective Vaccine Effectiveness (VE): Vaccinated residents had a VE of 90% against severe COVID-19 outcomes, with substantially milder cases and lower hospitalization rates.
Crowding Impacts Severity: High-crowding facilities had more severe outbreaks, suggesting a priority for vaccination in such settings to mitigate risk.
Why It Matters:
The sharp decline in severe COVID-19 outcomes due to vaccination highlights its critical role in long term care settings. Facilities should aim for high vaccination rates, particularly in more crowded homes, to protect elderly residents from severe illness and death.
